Now, Imagine managing a dog park, which is different fundamentally from other JCOS parks... Wouldn't a rational park manager seek and apply best practices specific to dog park management? Imagine you discover excessive poop. What do other parks do about doggy doo? Gold standard response is to - TEMPORARILY close park for 3 days to 2 weeks and initiate poop clean up immediately. This is periodically done at dog parks across the country. Denverites are no more or less responsible dog owners than anywhere else! Step 2, re-open the park and put up signage saying, "zero tolerance enforcement of dog poop pick up." and then put a park ranger in the park during peak weekend times and ticket everyone who doesn't pick up their poop or another dog's poop, if they can't find it. Imagine if you were a responsible Park Manager, and your park ranger discovered high e-coli in a tiny intermittent spring fed creek that dogs run through... Would you sit on the e-coli results for 6 months, like JCOS did, or would you immediately post signage, put notice on your website and tell the public about the problem and how you are immediately addressing it?! Well, JeffCo's Open Space's Irresponsible and downright Arrogant managers - Tom Hoby and Matt Robbins did none of that. In fact, they did not post it on their website till sometime between November and January. They did not tell the Bear Creek Watershed Association nor the directly affected water manager at the Evergreen Metro District about it till it was in the Denver Post in January! Furthermore, not only did Mr. Hoby and Robbins not address the issues, nor responsibly message them to the community and park users in a responsible way, but they also created public hysteria in January with 6 month old water test results. In fact, the Evergreen Metro District water experts tested the water in January and found an effectively ZERO E-COLI just around the time JCOS was scaring my neighbors about "20 times the safe limit." In fact, Hoby and Robbins forgot to ever tell the media that a volunteer group spent 2,000 + hours cleaning up poop and had rectified the ecoli problems. Instead, they went on camera and took credit, saying, "we picked up 460 pounds of poop..." the park must close?! Shame on you Matt Robbins and Tom Hoby. You have disgraced Open Space, lost the public's trust, and alienated 200+ dedicated park volunteers. Mr. Hoby, If you choose to follow through on April 4th with closing the Evergreen Dog Park permanently, there are tens of thousands of angry taxpayers who love this park, and now know you JCOS are to blame for the park's issues... Mr. Hoby and Robbins, together you have managed to renege on single promise or agreement made and been incredibly arrogant and deceptive while doing so! I want to clarify that our anger is really limited to the Jeffco County Commissioners who blindly support park closure for reasons we are now discovering and Matt Robbins and Tom Hoby. My anger and I imagine other park users too, does not extend to the 100 or so dedicated JeffCo Open Space Employees who envisioned and built 2 years ahead of schedule this magical one of a kind dog park. Thank you JCOS employees, it is the management that is the problem here. UPDATE: I happened to view JeffCo’s Evergreen Dog Park Website and was amazed to find the page bottom latest table of water sampling for E-coli through August 2017 - jeffco.us/open-space/parks/elk-meadow-dog-off-leash-area/ So, it turns out that the incoming water Entering the dog park (site 1) appears to be Infested with Ecoli, as high as 488 cfu/100ml, in August, which is many times above the safety limits for recreation. If these numbers are to be believed, obviously, there was and is another source for e-coli in the intermittent spring fed creek that flows from the Cattle Ranch into dog park area.
