Customer Reviews about Jefferson County Animal Control:

  • I had been taking care of a dog for a friends friend. The owner was clearly abusive and the dog was not living a happy life. It bit a roommate so I contacted animal control saying we couldn't keep the dog anymore after this incident. They showed up within 90 minutes and were very professional and told us everything to tell the owner should they decide they want to keep the dog. I wish they had a policy to prevent abusive owners from getting their dogs back, but at least I know he is in a good place until then. I have nothing but respect for these people doing there jobs.

I came across a suffering squirrel with distemper. I was later informed by Lakewood Animal Control that wildlife can be prone to contracting the disease when temperatures flip from warm to cold & back. I called dispatch and they were very helpful and friendly. An officer called me within a few minutes, was in the area and arrived in about 5. She was kind and immediately euthanized the poor starving squirrel. I was very thankful for Animal Control and the officer that day. I am sad to say that my experiences with them since then has been quite contrary. My last call left me feing that this is definitely more animal control than protection. I don't know if some of these people have watched too many cowboy movies, or what. There has been a horrible situation with a poor locked up dog in my neighborhood for a year and a half. He is constantly howling non-stop all day & into the evening every day, six days a week. I made a report and received an aggressive response from an Animal Control officer flatly telling me that the animal was in tact and that the owner had the right to cage the dog as much as they chose to, as long as he had shelter from the elements. First, pardon my humane concern and secondly - could you maybe not side with the abuser? Regardless of laws, could you maybe apply your position of authority and at least try to implore an attitude that merely suggests civility and attempt to reason with an animal owner that is, if nothing else, creating an extensive noise disturbance to the surrounding community? Needless to say, the dog was left pleading to a merciless universe until his voice went complety hoarse. I can often still hear him desperately trying to yelp, but he can't hardly make a sound and gives up readily. I have been listening to the suffering of this dog for a year and a half. I have been very disturbed for him and worry about him daily, so thought I would try to see what Animal Control might advise about the extensive situation. An officer called me with an abrassive tone in her voice and started questioning me. Hadn't I already called about this once before and, what - do I live there now, or what??? (Huh?) I will spare the details, but it was obvious that she was unconcerned and felt bothered that I had even reached out. I asked her why it wasn't an animal welfare issue when a dog is caged for the majority of his life and has now experienced the loss of his voice, a medical trauma as result. I asked her what was the harm in attempting a conversation, or even making alternate suggestions to the dog owner, but she didn't have a response. This officer literally came off as being rather hostile from the beginning of our conversation and I had not been volitile in the least. Thanks for the community service, Lakewood Animal Control, but please always have a heart.
